Holistic Help for Summer Fun

Summer is a time of relaxation for many humans and non-humans.  But, in true Yin/Yang fashion, it seems that each enjoyable activity brings with it the potential for less than enjoyable consequences.  Picnics in the park expose us to insect bites and food poisoning.  Walks down a shady trail might bring us in contact with snake bites, spider bites, and poison oak.  Hiking along a quiet stream can result in a sprained ankle or bruises.  A game of fetch among the waves on the beach may be cut short by sunburn or paw abrasions.  Fortunately, Aromatherapy can help ease the suffering caused by Summer mishaps.

Aromatherapy uses essential oils that are extracted from plants.  They exert a biologic effect on the body when absorbed through the skin or inhaled.  Some people claim the effects are due to associating the aroma with pleasant memories.  However, I doubt many pets have sniffed Niaouli, Bergamot, or Red Thyme much less link it to pleasant memories.   Pure essential oils can have strong side effects, especially during pregnancy.  What fragrance “memories” would stimulate an early whelping or cause brown spots in your skin?

Light colored pets, like humans, are at risk of sunburn.  Taking the usual precautions, such as staying out of the afternoon sun, can be helpful.  Still there will be times when your pet may be overexposed despite your best efforts.  For mild to moderate sunburn, misting the skin with water containing a few drops of Bergamot essential oil will soothe the burn.  It may also create brown skin patches.  Carrot Seed essential oil will protect against overexposure without creating skin blotches.  If the sunburn is more severe, seek veterinary care.  In the mean time, a mixture of Lavender, Roman Chamomile, and Distilled Water will relieve the pain.

What if your pet suffers from spider bites or stings?  Virtually all of the essential oils have antibiotic or antiseptic properties but most of them are too strong to be applied directly to the skin.  An exception is Lavender.  It is frequently applied neat, meaning undiluted, directly to stings, burns, and sores.  It is an essential part of any holistic first aid kit.
